Throw Back Time

Truth: I may or may not be watching Sixteen Candles at this exact moment when I probably should be learned more vocabulary for the GRE. I can't lie, I love this movie, no idea why since it's not particularly cinematic. It's just one of those movies that if I see that it's on TV I will stop and watch it. Oh and on another note I may or may not frequently use the terms "whatsa hoppining hotstuff" and "sofa city sweetheart" and if you don't know that these are from Sixteen Candles then I'm sorry you should definitely go out and rent it. So the reason for this trip down memory lane would be because I spent some time with some fellow ex Marcellians last night. It was crazy considering I hadn't seen most of them in at least three years. I never believed people when they said time speeds up as you get older but god dammit they were right. I honestly don't feel like I have been out of high school seven years. It's freaking crazy.
On the saving front I have switched my residency to New York State and thus have switched car insurance. After some research online I managed to switch to Geico where I paid a full six months for $250 which is a big savings considering I used to pay $70 a month in Massachusetts. Otherwise still plugging away at work and attempting to not spend money. It's a challenge to break the habit of buying. It's almost like stress eating or eating because you are bored. Anyhoo later taters

Coming clean

Alright so confession time.. I'm scared, yup pretty much shit less to say the least. I may put on this fearless facade well, surprise surprise that's the biggest con of all. I'm scared of trying and failing miserably, of rejection and of proving everyone wrong. Everyone that believes that I can do anything. That I can not only wear the yellow corduroys but make them work. Does anyone else still feel like they are fourteen years old? I mean no joke, I'm twenty six now (damn that's scary) and I still feel like I'm fourteen slacking off on my math homework. Except the math homework is my life. I've been procrastinating on living my life, I'm waiting for something to happen some big lightening strike, some epiphany. But I'm figuring out that's not how life happens, it doesn't happen to you, you happen to it.
I don't know what I want to be when I grow up.... does anyone? Here's an idea, can't I just be me? Why does some job have to define who I am?! Granted as always this is quite easier to say than practice. So here's it, what I am at this instant. I'm neurotic, a bit obsessive at times, too fast driving, clumsy, dreamer. A constant mover and shaker, quick witted, artistic, music loving, movie watching, book reader, sarcastic remark maker, baking, sun worshiping, hammock laying Holly. That okay with everyone? Okay well now that we have established that, one last thing... no more excuses, failure is not an option. Ahem did you hear me? Failure is Not an Option.

Oh vey

So five weeks down and not too much to show for it. I feel more confused now than ever. I don't know whether to pursue Graduate School or pursue the owning your own business route. Both seem like they would work, but I really wish someone would tell me what way to go. If someone could just make the hard decisions for me that would be fabulous. Cause I could really use that right now. The scary thought is that I think I know the answer but it's just not the easiest solution. I know that it will be hard... wait extremely hard. Ultimately I know what I have to do it just scares the crap out of me...why can't there be easy decisions in life?! Any ideas?

One month down, eleven to go...

Alright so big surprise obviously I've successfully made it through one month and hopefully only have a mear eleven to go. That's what you might call thinkin' pos-e-tive. Yup I did it, I dropped the "g" in thinking and changed the spelling of positive. Yup I'm a rebel. Things are going alright, been working four weeks now and am not making as much as I would like to make but obviously I'm not spending as much. Anyway in other news, I'll be turning the big 2-6 this weekend....eeeeeek and have decided to expel some reflections on my 25th year of life. In my 25th year I made some new friends, moved to New York for two whole weeks, moved to Massachusetts for nine whole months and have since moved back to New York.... crazy roller coaster that is my life. Discovered I don't want to be doing what I'm doing forever and have decided I want to do my part to make a difference and hopefully be able to work for a non profit organization in the not too distant future. We shall see, everyday is another opportunity. I'm learning to make better financial decisions, and therefore better life decisions. I think that's all I got right now, so with that I wish everyone a Happy Labor Day and stay clear of Earle that hurricane bastard.

Week 4

Alright so have officially entered into week 4, on my second job attempt. Which is much better than the first attempt, minus the fact that I'm not working a full forty hour work week so therefore the ole' pay check ain't quite as sweet as I wish it was. Bonus! I do get tips, granted they aren't super huge but any little bit helps at this point. I think the hardest issue that I'm dealing with is not buying anything and/or breaking that "I need to buy things" mentality. I mean it's not like I'm going back to school, so I don't need new shoes, new pencils and the must have new lunch pail. Honestly I really don't have any needs. I gots pants to cover my a...argh bum and I got shoes for my feet so I can't really complain too much. Also the fact that the good old state of New York taxes you on every material good you can imagine keeps my credit card in my wallet. Hopefully in a few months I will be able to report lots of savings.

Onto matters of the mind. I recently eagerly went to see Eat, Pray, Love the movie after finally reading it this past April. I have to say I was quite disappointed. Not in Julia Roberts, she always is good well for the most part her crying in Steel Magnolias wanted to make me rip my eyeballs out but anyway. I just thought that the movie didn't do the book justice. Which I suppose is a hard task, this book has become a sort of bible for 20 something females all over the place and to bring that to life would be quite difficult. I just felt like it left something lacking. I mean this book made me re-evaluate things and want to go on a journey of self discovery not unlike Liz Gilbert. Now don't get me wrong there were parts that I did enjoy. I liked the analysis of eating the pizza in Napoli and how Liz askes Sophie, if in all her years of sleeping with men had any asked her to leave once her clothes were off. Obviously the answer was no. This I thought was worth mentioning since as a society we put way too much emphasis on how we look and all the things that we see as wrong with ourselves when we should instead celebrate all our curves. Granted this is always much easier to say than practice but then again these are just my meandering thoughts which doesn't mean too much.

Alright that is enough for now, peace out sauerkraut.

Three Weeks Down

What can I say, it's been three weeks and have I had a huge epiphany? Um in a word....no. I have on the other hand realized how important it is to own up to your decisions. I think one of my biggest issues is that I don't like to disappoint or piss people off. Basically I would rather stay in a sticky situation and just be pissed off on a daily basis then say "enough is enough, I'm done". My most reason encounter with this issue was quitting the cookie factory after one week of work. As my usual self, I didn't want to quit or upset anyone. Well push came to shove and it simply wasn't worth the aggravation. No idea if this helps me or anyone else but whoop there it is.

Be Right or Do the Right Thing..

Alright so I've been meaning to put this one out into the ether but keep forgetting so hear it is. Only a mear two weeks after it first making an appearance into my life. It's something that my dad said to me a few weeks ago. In life you have to decide to either be right or do the right thing.

So here are my thoughts on the issue.. I think that too often in life we have the desire to be right, almost to a fault. We would rather sever relationships with people all in the name of being right. Well damn I say why can't we all just try to do the right thing once in a while. Anyway just something to ponder.

Lessons Learned

Alright so I'm two full weeks in..... annnnnnd I have since then started a new job and henceforth will be quitting said job tomorrow. Ya here's the lesson learned, don't just take the first job that comes your way because you might just end up cutting out 3000 small cookies in two days. Recall if you will the fairly famous scene from I Love Lucy where Lucy is working in a candy factory and she can't keep up with the candies coming down the shoot. Now replace Lucy with moi and the candies with cookies and that was my Wednesday. Jealous much?! Oh yea I bet you are. So needless to say I now have the daunting task of quitting my job one week in, fun Friday if I do say so myself.
Other than that things are pretty good around the house a few little scuttles here and there. As for the money saving adventure living at home has reduced my living expenses. No rent, no utilities, no internet, no cable. So hopefully once I start seeing some money coming in I will start seeing some debts fall!

Over and out :)

Reality Sets In

One week down, way to many left to count. Hit a rough patch tonight with my folks. Fight numero uno, which I think is mostly a result of the fact that reality has set in and it's starting to sink in that I am moved home for an indefinite amount of time. In a way I feel like my life has been put on hold while I make the necessary changes to continue my life. I know that's not the case but in a way that's simply how I feel. Anyway I do have one like bit of wisdom that was passed along to me from Papa Bear. In life you have the choice to either be right or do the right thing. Okay stop....... think about it for a minute......... Have you ever got into a disagreement with someone where neither party is willing to admit that they are wrong?! I have to say that I would think everyone has at one point or another. Anyway just something to think about.

Lesson #1 - Admitting you may have a problem

So not unlike many other people in there 20's and maybe 30's I like to spend money that I don't have. I never fully learned budgeting. Don't get me wrong I have held a job and worked pretty much ever since I was 14 so I've been working for around 12 years. Damn and yet still I like many others have debt. My main goal for the next year is to become more financially stable. With the support of my parents my expenses will pretty much consist of my car payment (approximately $227.74), my car insurance (roughly $72 a month) and my credit card payment. Alright now here is the nitty gritty I owe approximately $3000 on my current credit card. I also need to pay my parents back for old credit card debt dating back to High School. Reason #412 why you should not just give your high school student a credit card. At least with out explaining the importance of only spending what you can actually afford. This has been a hard lesson to learn but I have faith that I can turn things around for myself and become a better person in the long run.

The Wheel is broken

Here's the deal, I don't want to use this as my own personal ranting zone... but i have to take a minute and express my utter distaste for the human race. I just feel like somewhere along the line we've gotten it wrong as a general population. The lack of consideration for our fellow man and the earth in which we currently are hanging out. As I'm driving home from the Post Office today (which btw is a whole different rant) I see the girl in front of me dump her iced coffee out the window of her car, directly onto the pavement and then tap her cigarette ashes out on top of them. Uh seriously?!?! You couldn't wait the 5 minutes till you get home to dump them?!? Granted I realize not everyone is going to drive fuel efficient vehicles or compost our waste but is it too much to ask that we all try just a liiiiiiitle bit harder? And as the following rant states the earth will be fine, we are the ones that are f'ed. Anyway enjoy le rant

Here's a little quote from George Carlin's rant on "The Planet is Fine"

"We’re so self-important. So self-important. Everybody’s going to save something now. “Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails.” And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. What? Are these fucking people kidding me? Save the planet, we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet. We haven’t learned how to care for one another, we’re gonna save the fucking planet?
I’m getting tired of that shit. Tired of that shit. I’m tired of fucking Earth Day, I’m tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is there aren’t enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world save for their Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don’t give a shit about the planet. They don’t care about the planet. Not in the abstract they don’t. Not in the abstract they don’t. You know what they’re interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They’re worried that some day in the future, they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn’t impress me.
Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet. Nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The PEOPLE are fucked. Difference. Difference. The planet is fine. Compared to the people, the planet is doing great. Been here four and a half billion years. Did you ever think about the arithmetic? The planet has been here four and a half billion years. We’ve been here, what, a hundred thousand? Maybe two hundred thousand? And we’ve only been engaged in heavy industry for a little over two hundred years. Two hundred years versus four and a half billion. And we have the CONCEIT to think that somehow we’re a threat? That somehow we’re gonna put in jeopardy this beautiful little blue-green ball that’s just a-floatin’ around the sun?
The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through all kinds of things worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles…hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worlwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages…And we think some plastic bags, and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet…the planet…the planet isn’t going anywhere. WE ARE!
We’re going away. Pack your shit, folks. We’re going away. And we won’t leave much of a trace, either. Thank God for that. Maybe a little styrofoam. Maybe. A little styrofoam. The planet’ll be here and we’ll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet’ll shake us off like a bad case of fleas. A surface nuisance.
You wanna know how the planet’s doing? Ask those people at Pompeii, who are frozen into position from volcanic ash, how the planet’s doing. You wanna know if the planet’s all right, ask those people in Mexico City or Armenia or a hundred other places buried under thousands of tons of earthquake rubble, if they feel like a threat to the planet this week. Or how about those people in Kilowaia, Hawaii, who built their homes right next to an active volcano, and then wonder why they have lava in the living room.
The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed, and if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new pardigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn’t share our prejudice towards plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. The earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn’t know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, “Why are we here?” Plastic…asshole.
So, the plastic is here, our job is done, we can be phased out now. And I think that’s begun. Don’t you think that’s already started? I think, to be fair, the planet sees us as a mild threat. Something to be dealt with. And the planet can defend itself in an organized, collective way, the way a beehive or an ant colony can. A collective defense mechanism. The planet will think of something. What would you do if you were the planet? How would you defend yourself against this troublesome, pesky species? Let’s see… Viruses. Viruses might be good. They seem vulnerable to viruses. And, uh…viruses are tricky, always mutating and forming new strains whenever a vaccine is developed. Perhaps, this first virus could be one that compromises the immune system of these creatures. Perhaps a human immunodeficiency virus, making them vulnerable to all sorts of other diseases and infections that might come along. And maybe it could be spread sexually, making them a little reluctant to engage in the act of reproduction.
Well, that’s a poetic note. And it’s a start. And I can dream, can’t I? See I don’t worry about the little things: bees, trees, whales, snails. I think we’re part of a greater wisdom than we will ever understand. A higher order. Call it what you want. Know what I call it? The Big Electron. The Big Electron…whoooa. Whoooa. Whoooa. It doesn’t punish, it doesn’t reward, it doesn’t judge at all. It just is. And so are we. For a little while."

Stuff White People Like

Whilst out an aboot today having a bit of retail therapy with sister Katie today I was reminded of the every humorous "Stuff White People Like" blog and book. Now let me tell you this shit's pretty damn funny. Although what is really sad is that it's so disturbingly true it's not even funny. So here's le old link, take a peek it's pretty damn funny. Stuff White People Like

hello and goodbye

Oh the shear awkwardness

I'm just going to put this one out there... I secretly (well now not so secretly) loooove awkward moments. Nothing beats that feeling you get when you literally don't have the vaguest idea how to respond to something or what to say. So the great Kate Hupp recently turned me on to a wonderfully awkward site  Awkward Family Photos. Not only are the photos delightfully awkward but the sarcastic comments to go along with them are just laugh out loud, piss your pants, maybe laugh so hard you can't make noise laugh. Seriously scroll through have a laugh on me!

Adios!

Be Ok

Seeing as how nothing particularly humorous is sticking out in my mind today, but I desperately wanted to blog since it's been a few days I thought I would share the funny ads that the Katies found in the newspaper...... Drum roll please...

"Oh Yes, the penetrating power of Jesus!!" Two words that should never go together... Penetrating and Jesus... Yeah I did just go there... but really!? Are there people out there that actually buy this shit?!?!

Alrighty then.. now onto the Slim'N Lift... uh I believe George's father and Kramer fought over whether to call it the Manssiere or the Bro.. soooo please please don't buy one because this is just pretty darn sad.

Anyhooooo so thanks Katie B, and Katie C. for these wonderful examples of just what is wrong with America and if nothing else allows us something to have a good chuckle over..

Enjoy kids!

Hi, you suck

No, not you dear friends and/or family that by chance might read this?

Nope referring to this girl.. yup pointing at me. Question for ya'll what do I do for a living? If you maybe answered bake cakes, give yourself a nice pat on the back cause I do. This means that obviously when people have birthdays I step up and usually offer/are expected to make a cake. Well since the parental ones are coming to Massachusetts this weekend and since my big sis's birthday is next weekend I decided I would make her cake this week. No worries this story does have a twist just setting the scene. Well I have this chocolate buttermilk cake that is pretty much to die for so I figure I'll make that today. Well somewhere between me making it and taking it out of the oven something when terribly wrong. Like hot mess wrong. As in super flat, super dense nastiness. Well not complete nastiness I tasted it, eh it was okay, or at least edible but not exactly "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" ish if you know what I mean. So this would just not do, googled a recipe for Baker's Unsweetened Chocolate Cakes and found a super one bowl recipe... well it's going in the oven so hopefully for Katie's sake it comes out. If not totally going to go and by a mix cake. Oh yea and I made some d-e-lightful Almond Poundcake. Yup googled that shit too. Seriously off topic, what did we do before google? Other off topic anyone remember Encarta? What ever happened to that? Hmmmm something to ponder while watching the cake bake.. Anyway back on topic, the recipe for poundcake called for Lemon Extract, well I didn't have any and instead had some Almond, probably left over from Christmas soooo I got it done. Wow that was a boring little side story and I apologize for that few seconds of your life you will not get back. Alrighty then.. here's to baking! Oh and not being a complete S.A.L

get it?

no?

Okay .... S.A.L = Suck at Life :)

40 Day Dream

Seeing as how nothing terribly humorous happened in all the excitement that is Whole Foods on a Monday I thought I would share an old story that could be considered funny. So when I first moved down here I needed to get a hair cut. Not knowing really where to go and not wanting to spend tons of money, I called the first place that popped up when I googled my area. Well after driving around for around fifteen minutes looking for the place I finally gave up and decided to stop at "Janae's Salon". Heck it looked nice from the outside... well little did I know that I did not sport the right type of hair to get it done there. Yup definitely walked in and was the only white girl under 45 in the place. Besides that there was only one woman doing hair and four people under the dryers... so she asked
"What can I do for you hun?"
To which I responded "well I wanted to see if you had time to do a haircut, but I see your busy"
"Well I don't have time today but you can check anastasia down the street"
"Yup I can see that, thank you"

Uh saweet nothing like a little case of insert foot in mouth disease! My favorite.

Sugar Magnolia

I really love it when you get proof positive that you not only have a great sense of humor buuut you know how to use it. The sis came out to visit last night so that we could see the latest Gary Marshall rom com Valentine's Day. Personally one of my favorite part of going to the movies is the previews. Well for this particular movie there was a preview for Get Him to the Greek, Jonah Hill's latest raunchy comedy coming out sometime soon. In case you don't know he is well known for other movies such as Knocked Up and Superbad. Granted this aren't cinematic masterpieces but they are usually funnier than shit. So Kate and I are sitting there pretty much peeing our pants, silent laughing our asses of. What is funny about this situation is that I'm pretty sure we were the only two people laughing in the entire movie theater. This has only happened to me one other time and that was many moons ago when Robbie Jay and I went to see The Bad News Bears with Billy Bob Thorton. Umm funny, funny stuff. Yup only two people laughing their asses off.

Again proof positive that you are a funny person. That is all. In the words of Heidi Klum "auf wiedersehen"

Goodbye My Almost Lover

Sooooo first and foremost, this is not meant to offend anyone. Literally it's just my observations on life and then I put my spin on things. So here it goes.

Went to the Furthur concert last night. Furthur is a band comprised of Bob Weir and Phil Lesh (founding members of the Grateful Dead) and some other people. Basically they play all Dead songs and a few from their own offshoots Rat Dog and Phil and Friends I guess. Either I have not done enough drugs or I like bathing and being in the now waaay too much. I just don't get it. Why do grown men think it's okay to stuff themselves into Tie-Dyed Shirts?! When did spastic pelvic thrusts become dancing?! When did it become socially except able to just not bathe?! Okay I can respect the massive repetoire of music these guys have created throughout their musical lifetime. Hits like Scarlet Begonias, Uncle Tom's Band and countless others have been covered and recovered so many times that my first encounter with Scarlet Begonias was through Jimmy Buffet.  I guess I just don't get the cult like vibe at these stereotype driven events. Does it making you better than me because you have seen "the dead" twenty seven times? Uh no, I haven't even been alive that long? Once is enough for me, thanks.

Further, I do believe this is the end of the man child. The concert was our last planned "hang out" and it kind of felt like the closing credits. I mean clearly he felt comfortable enough to lean over to me prior to the show starting and say "Further is spelled Furth-Ur, I saw your facebook status and you spelled it wrong". Really?! Is that necessary?! Well seeing as how you, and maybe two other people will even know what I'm talking about, I think we are safe. Oh besides the fact that this is coming from a kid who has spelled Ithaca, Ithica soooo many times I almost started counting. But since I am a reallly nice girl I filtered the urge to say something and instead am ranting about it on here. One last thing then I'm done. Do you really need to send me a text message with the set lists? I'm sitting right next to you dip shit. That one I had to say something about. To which there was the token shoulder shrug and I don't know response.

On that note, Goodbye!
